Replacing an old or failing boiler is one of the most impactful home improvements you can make. A modern A-rated condensing boiler converts over 90% of the gas it burns into usable heat — compared to as low as 60% for a G-rated boiler over 15 years old. The Energy Saving Trust estimates savings of up to 30% on annual heating bills after upgrading an old system.
As Vaillant Advance Installers, we supply Vaillant boilers at trade prices and register your guarantee directly with the manufacturer — up to 10 years depending on the model. We also install all Worcester Bosch models, Ideal and Baxi boilers, sourcing whichever brand best suits your home, budget and long-term needs.
Every installation includes a full system power flush to clear sludge and debris — especially important in Hertfordshire where hard water (300–400ppm) causes rapid scale build-up inside heat exchangers. Without protection, a new boiler can suffer reduced efficiency within 2–3 years. We fit a magnetic filter and discuss inline scale reducers with every customer.
Phone and WhatsApp quotes are free. For straightforward like-for-like combi replacements we can usually provide an accurate quote without a site visit. Conversions, relocations, and complex systems require a £95 call-out survey (credited against the installation cost).
Combi, System or Regular Boiler — Which Do You Need?
Choosing the right boiler type is the most important decision in any installation. Here's what you need to know about each option.
Combi Boiler
The UK's most popular boiler type. Provides central heating and instant hot water on demand — no cylinder, no tank, compact wall-mounted unit. Ideal for 1–3 bedroom properties with 1–2 bathrooms.
Advantages
- — No hot water cylinder needed (saves space)
- — Instant hot water at the tap
- — Lower installation cost
- — Only heats water when demanded
Limitations
- — Flow rate drops with multiple taps open
- — Not ideal for large homes with 3+ bathrooms
Typical price range
£1,500 – £2,800
Like-for-like replacement, ex VAT
System Boiler
Works with a hot water storage cylinder (no cold tank needed). Great for homes with higher hot water demand — multiple bathrooms, larger families. The boiler and pump are built in, simplifying installation.
Advantages
- — Handles multiple hot water outlets simultaneously
- — No loft tank needed
- — Great for 3–5 bed homes
- — Compatible with solar thermal
Limitations
- — Cylinder takes up space
- — Hot water stored (not instant)
Typical price range
£1,800 – £3,200
Includes cylinder if needed, ex VAT
Regular / Heat-Only Boiler
The traditional boiler type found in older properties. Requires both a hot water cylinder and a cold water tank in the loft. Most common when upgrading an existing gravity-fed system without full re-piping.
Advantages
- — Like-for-like upgrade is straightforward
- — Good for properties with multiple bathrooms
- — Lower boiler unit cost
Limitations
- — Requires loft space for cold tank
- — Lower pressure than system/combi
Typical price range
£2,000 – £3,500
Full system with cylinder, ex VAT
Boiler Sizing Guide — Which kW Output Do You Need?

We walk you through the controls, register your manufacturer guarantee, issue your Gas Safe installation certificate, and cover all labour with our 12-month workmanship guarantee.
Hertfordshire Hard Water — Protecting Your New Boiler
Hertfordshire sits within one of England's hardest water zones — 300–400ppm (parts per million) compared to a national average of around 200ppm. At this hardness level, limescale builds up inside your boiler's heat exchanger, restricting flow and forcing the boiler to work harder. Within 2–3 years of an unprotected installation, efficiency can drop significantly — and some manufacturer guarantees become void without documented protection measures.
Every boiler we install comes with a Fernox or Adey magnetic system filter as standard. For properties on noticeably hard water, we also recommend discussing an inline scale reducer (fitted to the cold water inlet) or a whole-house water softener, which eliminates scale completely and can extend the life of all your appliances.
Hard Water Protection — What We Include
Energy Efficiency & Government Schemes
Every new gas boiler installed in the UK must be a condensing boiler to Building Regulations standards — achieving 90%+ efficiency (ErP A-rated). Replacing a G-rated boiler (as low as 60%) can save homeowners up to 30% on their annual heating bills, according to the Energy Saving Trust. On a typical Hertfordshire semi-detached, that can equate to £200–£400 per year.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides grants of up to £7,500 toward air source heat pumps and ground source heat pumps — not gas boiler replacements. For customers interested in low-carbon heating, we can advise on compatibility and point you toward the right resources, though we currently install gas boilers only.
The ECO4 scheme may fund a new gas boiler for households on certain qualifying benefits. If you receive Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or similar, you may qualify for a funded replacement — we can signpost you to the right channels. VAT at 0% applies to certain energy-saving measures including some boiler installations for qualifying households.
ErP A-Rated Boilers
90%+ efficiency — the legal minimum for any new gas boiler installation under current UK Building Regulations.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
£7,500 grant available for air source heat pumps. Does not apply to gas boiler replacements. Available through Ofgem.
ECO4 Scheme
Free or heavily subsidised boiler replacement for qualifying low-income households. Eligibility based on household income and benefit status.
0% VAT on Energy Saving Products
Reduced VAT may apply to certain boiler installations and energy-saving measures. Confirm with us at the point of quote.
Smart Controls & Savings
A smart thermostat (Hive, Nest, Vaillant sensoHOME) can reduce heating bills by a further 10–20% by learning your schedule.
Boiler Installation FAQs
A like-for-like combi boiler replacement typically costs £1,500–£2,800 fully installed (ex VAT). A new installation, system type conversion or boiler relocation ranges from £2,500–£4,500 depending on complexity. Phone and WhatsApp quotes are free — call 0208 092 1359 or message us and we'll confirm your price before any work begins.
Most like-for-like combi replacements are completed within one day. Converting from a regular to a combi system, relocating the boiler or running new pipework may take two days. We confirm your exact timeline when we provide your quote.
All A-rated modern boilers perform well provided they're properly protected against scale. Vaillant ecoTEC and Worcester Bosch Greenstar both have strong track records in hard water conditions. The most important factor is protection — magnetic filter and scale reducer — which we include with every install.
Not always — but often recommended. If your existing system has cold radiators, black water when bled, or has never been flushed, cleaning the system before installing a new boiler prevents sludge from circulating and damaging the new heat exchanger. We assess this at survey.
For a typical 3-bedroom semi-detached with one bathroom, a 28–32kW combi is usually correct. Properties with two bathrooms may need 32–36kW. We calculate the exact size based on your home's heat loss and hot water demand — not a blanket recommendation.
We back all our installation labour with a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Manufacturer guarantees are additional — Vaillant offers up to 10 years on qualifying models when installed by a Vaillant Advance Installer; Worcester Bosch up to 12 years (subject to annual servicing). We register all manufacturer guarantees on your behalf.
Yes. We relocate boilers within kitchens, move them to utility rooms or airing cupboards, and handle all gas, flue and water pipework. Relocations require a site survey to quote accurately and typically take two days. A standard £95 call-out covers the survey visit.
A combi provides instant hot water and heating with no cylinder — compact and efficient for smaller homes. A system boiler works with a separate hot water cylinder, ideal for larger homes with multiple bathrooms. A regular boiler needs both a cylinder and a cold water header tank, common in older properties. We advise which type suits your home at the quote stage.
We are Vaillant Advance Installers, allowing us to register Vaillant guarantees directly with the manufacturer (up to 10 years). We install all Worcester Bosch models and are highly experienced with the full Greenstar range, but are not Worcester Bosch accredited installers. We also install Ideal and Baxi boilers across Hertfordshire.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants of £7,500 for heat pumps — not gas boilers. The ECO4 scheme may fund a boiler replacement for households on qualifying benefits. We can advise you on eligibility and point you to the right application channels.
Yes — we fit one with every installation and will not commission a boiler without one. In Hertfordshire particularly, a magnetic filter (Fernox TF1 or Adey MagnaClean) is essential. Without it, iron oxide sludge accumulates in the heat exchanger and can void your manufacturer guarantee.
Modern A-rated condensing boilers achieve over 90% efficiency. A G-rated boiler (pre-2000) might only be 60–70% efficient. Replacing it can reduce your heating bills by up to 30% — potentially £200–£400 per year on a typical Hertfordshire household, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
Our engineers arrive at the agreed time, lay dust sheets, isolate gas and water supplies, remove and dispose of the old boiler, install the new unit, flush the system, fit the magnetic filter, connect the controls and commission everything. We test every circuit, check for leaks and issue your Gas Safe certificate. Most installs are completed the same day.
