Central Heating Installation in Hertfordshire
Full central heating system design and installation across Hertfordshire. New systems from scratch, conversions from storage heaters or back-boilers, and system upgrades — all with smart controls and Building Regulations compliance.
Complete Central Heating from Design to Commission
A well-designed central heating system is the foundation of a comfortable, energy-efficient home. Whether you are moving into a property with no central heating, upgrading an ageing system, or converting from an old back-boiler or storage heaters, we design and install systems calculated precisely for your home's layout and heat demand.
Every central heating system we install starts with a proper heat load calculation — not an estimate. We assess the heat loss of each room, account for insulation levels and window sizes, and specify the correct boiler output and radiator sizes to ensure the system performs efficiently. Oversizing a boiler wastes money on every gas bill; undersizing means rooms never reach temperature.
We handle every element of the project: boiler supply and installation, all pipework, radiator supply and fitting, thermostatic radiator valves, smart controls and commissioning. You deal with one team throughout — no coordinating between separate trades.
All central heating installations are notifiable work under the Gas Safety Regulations. As Gas Safe registered engineers (No. 936121), we handle all certification, building control notification and documentation on your behalf.

Types of Central Heating Installation
Every property is different. Here is how we approach each type of central heating project we carry out across Hertfordshire.
New System — First-Time Central Heating
For properties currently heated by storage heaters, electric panel heaters or solid fuel only. We install a new gas boiler, all pipework, radiators and controls from scratch.
- Gas boiler (combi or system, sized to property)
- All copper pipework laid under floors
- Radiators in every room — correctly sized
- Thermostatic radiator valves throughout
- Smart thermostat and programmer
- System flush, balance and commission
- Gas Safe certificate and building control notification
Back-Boiler Conversion
Replace an old back-boiler behind a gas fire with a modern A-rated boiler installed in the kitchen or utility room. The existing pipework may be reused or replaced depending on condition.
- Back-boiler and fire surround removal and disposal
- Chimney flue decommissioned and capped
- New A-rated boiler in kitchen or utility room
- New flue route installed
- Pipework assessed — replaced or reused
- Radiators and TRVs upgraded if required
- Smart controls and full commission
Storage Heater to Central Heating Conversion
One of the most common projects in Hertfordshire. Storage heaters are removed, a new gas boiler is installed and full radiator central heating replaces the electric system throughout.
- Storage heaters removed and disposed of
- New gas boiler installed (requires gas supply)
- Full pipework installed throughout property
- Radiators in every habitable room
- Smart thermostat and zoned controls
- Electrical connections to new controls
- Building Regs compliance and certification
System Upgrade & Extension
Existing system in good condition but needs extending (new extension, loft conversion) or upgrading (new boiler, smart controls, TRV upgrades, power flush). We assess and recommend the most cost-effective approach.
- New radiators added to extensions or conversions
- Boiler replacement on existing pipework
- Smart controls retrofitted to existing system
- TRV upgrade across all radiators
- System flush and inhibitor dose
- Magnetic filter fitted
- System rebalanced throughout
Choosing the Right Boiler for Your System
The boiler is the heart of your central heating system. Here is how we choose the right type and size for your home.
Combi Boiler
Best for: 1–3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom
Advantages
- No hot water cylinder needed
- Hot water on demand
- Compact — frees up airing cupboard
- Lower installation cost
Considerations
- Pressure drops if multiple outlets run simultaneously
- Not ideal for larger homes with 2+ bathrooms
System Boiler
Best for: 3–5 bedrooms, 2+ bathrooms
Advantages
- Hot water cylinder stores volume
- Multiple bathrooms run simultaneously
- Faster hot water delivery to taps
- Better for high hot water demand
Considerations
- Requires space for hot water cylinder
- Slightly higher installation cost
Heat-Only (Regular) Boiler
Best for: Larger homes with existing cylinder & tank
Advantages
- Works well with existing cold water tank
- Good for large older properties
- Multiple hot water outlets at once
Considerations
- Most complex installation
- Cold water tank requires loft space
- Being replaced by system boilers in most retrofits
Boiler Output Size Guide
| Property Size | Radiators | Combi Output | System/Heat-Only Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 bed flat / small terrace | 5–8 | 24–28kW | 18–24kW |
| 3 bed semi-detached | 8–12 | 28–32kW | 24–28kW |
| 4 bed detached | 12–16 | 32–36kW | 28–35kW |
| 5+ bed large detached | 16+ | 36–42kW | 35–42kW |
* Sizing guide only — actual output is calculated from a room-by-room heat load assessment, not just property size.
Smart Heating Controls — Standard on Every Installation
All central heating systems we install include smart thermostat controls as standard. Smart controls allow you to manage your heating from your phone — setting schedules, adjusting temperatures remotely and receiving alerts if something needs attention.
Studies consistently show that smart controls reduce heating bills by 10–20% compared to a basic mechanical programmer, by ensuring the heating only runs when and where it is needed.
For larger properties, we install multi-zone systems — separating upstairs and downstairs (or individual rooms) into independently controlled heating zones, so you are not heating unused parts of your home.
Nest Learning Thermostat
Learns your schedule automatically
Hive Active Heating
Simple app control, UK-based support
Vaillant vSMART
Integrated with Vaillant boilers
Worcester Wave
Integrated with Worcester Bosch boilers
TRV Upgrades — Zone Every Room
Building Regulations require thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on all radiators except the one in the same room as the room thermostat. TRVs allow each room to be set at a different temperature — so bedrooms can be kept cooler while living rooms are warmer — reducing wasted heat and lowering bills.
We fit TRVs on every radiator as standard on new installations, and can retrofit them to existing systems on a separate visit.
What Building Regulations Require
- A separate boiler interlock (prevents boiler firing when no heat is needed)
- A timing device for heating and hot water
- TRVs on all radiators except the room thermostat zone
- A room thermostat in the main living zone
- A Gas Safe certificate on completion

Protecting Your New System — Hertfordshire Hard Water
In Hertfordshire's very hard water (300–400ppm), a new central heating system must be protected from day one. Without treatment, limescale will begin forming inside the new boiler heat exchanger within 12–18 months, reducing efficiency and potentially voiding the manufacturer's guarantee. We fit a magnetic filter and dose every new system with corrosion inhibitor as standard. For complete long-term protection, we recommend also discussing a water softener.

Frequently Asked Questions
A full central heating installation for a typical 3-bedroom semi-detached house ranges from £4,000–£8,000. A 4–5 bedroom detached property with a larger boiler and more radiators can reach £8,000–£12,000. The main variables are boiler capacity, number of radiators, complexity of pipework routing and the type of controls specified. A fixed written quote is agreed before any work begins.
A full new installation in a typical 3-bedroom property takes 4–6 working days. A 4–5 bedroom property or one requiring significant pipe runs through floors and ceilings may take 6–8 days. Conversions from storage heaters or back-boilers add 1–2 extra days. We provide a firm project timeline alongside your written quote.
Yes — this is one of the most common projects we carry out in Hertfordshire. We install a new gas boiler, lay all pipework, fit radiators in every room and commission full heating controls. The process typically takes 5–7 days. You will need a gas supply to the property (or we can arrange a new connection). The result is usually a significantly warmer home with more controllable and efficient heating.
Yes. Back-boiler removal and replacement with a modern combi or system boiler is a project we carry out regularly across Hertfordshire. The old back-boiler and fire surround are removed and the chimney flue is decommissioned. The new boiler is typically installed in the kitchen or utility room. The existing pipework may be reused or replaced depending on condition.
Boiler sizing depends on the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, the size of each room, insulation levels and your hot water demand. As a rough guide: 1–2 bedroom flat — 24–28kW; 3 bedroom semi — 28–32kW; 4–5 bedroom detached — 32–40kW. We carry out a proper heat load calculation for every installation to ensure the boiler is correctly sized — an oversized boiler wastes money and an undersized one cannot meet demand.
Yes. We install Nest, Hive, Vaillant vSMART and Worcester Wave smart thermostats as standard options. Smart controls allow you to control heating from your phone, set schedules by room and receive alerts if something goes wrong. Studies show smart controls reduce heating bills by 10–20% compared to a traditional programmer.
It depends on your hot water demand. A combi boiler heats water on demand without a separate hot water cylinder — ideal for 1–3 bedroom properties with one bathroom. A system boiler works with a hot water cylinder and is better suited to larger homes with multiple bathrooms where several people may use hot water simultaneously. We will recommend the right type based on your household size and usage.
In most new installations, yes — pipework needs to run under floors between rooms and floors. We always protect your home during this work with dust sheets and floor protection. We make good after lifting floorboards and aim to leave each room as close to its original state as possible. Any significant making-good work (e.g. plastering) is agreed upfront in your quote.
Yes. Wet (hydronic) underfloor heating can be installed as part of a new central heating system, either for the whole ground floor or for specific rooms such as kitchen or bathroom. We design systems that integrate underfloor heating zones with conventional radiators elsewhere in the property, controlled by a multi-zone smart thermostat.
Yes. Every new central heating installation is a notifiable work under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. We are Gas Safe registered (No. 936121) and issue the appropriate Gas Safety Certificate on completion. The work is also registered with your local authority through the building control notification process.
In Hertfordshire's very hard water (300–400ppm), a new heating system must be protected from day one. We fit a magnetic system filter as standard on every installation and dose the system with corrosion inhibitor (Fernox or Sentinel). For maximum long-term protection, we recommend also installing a water softener, which prevents scale forming anywhere in the system or boiler. Without protection, limescale will shorten the life of the new heat exchanger significantly.
Yes. If your existing system is in good condition but needs more radiators (for an extension, loft conversion or new room), we can extend the pipework and add radiators. If the boiler is ageing but the pipework and radiators are sound, a boiler-only replacement may be the best value option. We assess your current system and recommend the most cost-effective approach.
