For a minor sink blockage, a plunger or a small bottle of drain cleaner can sometimes clear a partial obstruction. However, chemical cleaners can damage older pipes and rarely clear a full blockage. If the problem recurs, or if you have a slow drain across multiple fixtures, you likely have a deeper obstruction that needs professional rodding or jetting. DIY attempts on external drains can also push the blockage further down and make professional clearance harder.

A CCTV survey involves passing a small camera through the drain on a flexible rod to inspect the pipework from the inside. We use it when a blockage keeps recurring, when we suspect root intrusion or a structural defect, before buying a property, or after a serious blockage to confirm the pipe is fully clear and undamaged. It produces a video report you can share with insurers or a solicitor.

You are responsible for the drainage within your property boundary — the pipes that serve only your property. Once a pipe becomes a shared drain (serving two or more properties), it becomes the responsibility of your water and sewerage company (Thames Water for most of Hertfordshire). If a blockage is in a public sewer, report it to Thames Water's 24-hour line. We can help identify where the blockage is and advise accordingly.

High-pressure jetting (also called hydro-jetting) uses a powerful jet of water — typically at 1,500–4,000 psi — to blast away grease, silt, roots, and scale from inside the drain. Unlike rods, which push the blockage, jetting also cleans the pipe walls, leaving less residue for future blockages to attach to. It is suitable for most drain sizes from 50 mm kitchen wastes up to 300 mm main sewers.

A standard sink or toilet unblock takes 30–60 minutes. External drain or main sewer clearance usually takes 1–2 hours. If we find root intrusion or a structural collapse during a CCTV survey, the repair timeline depends on the scale of the work — we will give you a written quote before starting.

We use dust sheets, protective equipment, and bring our own water supply for jetting. Once the drain is cleared we flush through thoroughly with clean water, clean up the work area, and dispose of any waste. You should be left with no trace we were there except a free-flowing drain.

Yes — roots are one of the most common causes of recurring external blockages. Roots are attracted to the moisture and nutrients inside a drain and can enter through even a hairline crack or a poorly jointed clay pipe. Once inside they grow rapidly, trapping debris and eventually causing a complete blockage or structural collapse. We remove roots by jetting and, if necessary, cutting, and can advise on pipe lining if the host pipe is damaged.

Recurring blockages usually indicate a root problem, a collapsed or misaligned pipe section, or a build-up issue caused by a partial sag (belly) in the pipe that traps water and solids. A CCTV survey will pinpoint the cause. Structural defects can often be repaired with no-dig pipe lining rather than excavation.

Drain relining (CIPP — cured-in-place pipe) is a no-dig repair method where a resin-impregnated liner is inserted into the damaged pipe and inflated to bond with the host pipe. It is ideal for cracked, root-damaged, or corroded pipes where excavation would be disruptive or expensive. We assess whether lining is suitable and quote accordingly; not every pipe is a candidate.
