A blocked drain is one of those problems that goes from an inconvenience to a health hazard very quickly. A kitchen sink that drains slowly today can be completely backed up by morning. An overflowing manhole in the garden is not something you can leave until next week. We offer same-day attendance across Hertfordshire precisely because blocked drains need to be dealt with today.

We use high-pressure water jetting as our primary clearance method wherever access permits. Unlike drain rods which simply push an obstruction along, jetting blasts the blockage apart and also cleans the pipe wall — removing the grease, soap residue, and root tendrils that cause blockages to return. The result is a genuinely clean pipe rather than just a temporarily unobstructed one.

For recurring blockages, we use CCTV to go inside the pipe and find out why. Root intrusion, a bellied section that traps debris, a cracked joint — these problems will keep causing blockages until they are properly fixed. Our CCTV reports include a full video recording suitable for insurance claims, property surveys, or landlord compliance records.

We also believe in being straight with you about responsibility. If your blockage turns out to be in a shared sewer or a public drain, we will tell you — and point you toward Thames Water rather than charge you to fix something that is not your responsibility to fix.

Types of Blockage We Clear

From kitchen sinks to main sewer drains, we have the right equipment for every job.

🍳

Kitchen Sink & Waste

  • Fat and grease build-up
  • Food debris and coffee grounds
  • Soap scum on pipe walls

Grease solidifies in cold water — never pour fat down the sink.

🚿

Bathroom Sink & Bath

  • Hair and soap accumulation
  • Toothpaste and cosmetic residue
  • Slow build-up in trap

Partial blockages show as slow drainage before a full block forms.

🚽

Toilet Blockage

  • Wet wipes and cotton buds
  • Sanitary products
  • Excessive toilet paper

Only flush the 3 Ps — pee, poo, and (toilet) paper.

🌧️

External Gullies

  • Leaf and silt accumulation
  • Mud and debris wash-in
  • Neglected maintenance

Regular jetting prevents costly garden flooding.

🔧

Main Sewer Drain

  • Root intrusion from trees
  • Grease and fat from multiple properties
  • Collapsed or cracked pipe

CCTV survey recommended to assess structural condition.

Manhole & Inspection Chambers

  • Silt and debris accumulation
  • Backing-up from downstream blockage
  • Broken cover allowing debris in

Overflowing manholes are a health hazard — call same day.

Our Drain Clearance Methods

We match the method to the blockage — the right tool makes the difference between a lasting result and one that returns next week.

🔩

Drain Rods

Best for: Partial blockages in accessible pipes

Flexible rods are fed into the drain and rotated to break up and push the blockage clear. Fast, effective for most household obstructions close to an access point.

💧

High-Pressure Water Jetting

Best for: Grease, root mass, silt, scale

A powerful water jet (1,500–4,000 psi) blasts the blockage and also cleans the pipe walls. The most thorough clearance method — leaves less residue than rodding alone.

📷

CCTV Drain Survey

Best for: Diagnosis, recurring blockages, pre-purchase surveys

A camera on a flexible rod is passed through the pipe to identify root intrusion, structural defects, bellied sections, or blockage location. Produces a video report.

🔧

No-Dig Pipe Lining

Best for: Cracked or root-damaged pipes

A resin-impregnated liner is inserted and inflated inside the damaged host pipe. Cheaper and less disruptive than excavation — no digging up drives or floors where suitable.

How It Works

01

Diagnosis

We assess the blockage — listening, inspecting accessible access points, and if needed, passing a camera through — to establish exactly where the obstruction is and what caused it.

02

Clearance

We choose the right method: rods for accessible domestic blockages; high-pressure jetting for grease, root mass, or silt. We work until the pipe runs free and water flows through cleanly.

03

CCTV Check (if needed)

For recurring blockages or suspected structural damage we pass the camera back through after clearing to confirm the pipe is fully open and structurally sound before we leave.

04

Report & Prevention Advice

We clean up, walk you through what caused the blockage, and give practical advice on preventing recurrence — whether that is changing habits, installing a grease trap, or scheduling regular maintenance jetting.

Frequently Asked Questions

In kitchens, the main culprits are fat, grease, and food debris that solidify inside the pipe. In bathrooms, hair and soap scum build up over time. Toilets block when non-flushable items — wet wipes, cotton buds, sanitary products — are flushed. Outside, the most common cause is root intrusion from trees and shrubs, followed by accumulation of leaves, silt, and debris in gullies.

For a minor sink blockage, a plunger or a small bottle of drain cleaner can sometimes clear a partial obstruction. However, chemical cleaners can damage older pipes and rarely clear a full blockage. If the problem recurs, or if you have a slow drain across multiple fixtures, you likely have a deeper obstruction that needs professional rodding or jetting. DIY attempts on external drains can also push the blockage further down and make professional clearance harder.

A CCTV survey involves passing a small camera through the drain on a flexible rod to inspect the pipework from the inside. We use it when a blockage keeps recurring, when we suspect root intrusion or a structural defect, before buying a property, or after a serious blockage to confirm the pipe is fully clear and undamaged. It produces a video report you can share with insurers or a solicitor.

You are responsible for the drainage within your property boundary — the pipes that serve only your property. Once a pipe becomes a shared drain (serving two or more properties), it becomes the responsibility of your water and sewerage company (Thames Water for most of Hertfordshire). If a blockage is in a public sewer, report it to Thames Water's 24-hour line. We can help identify where the blockage is and advise accordingly.

High-pressure jetting (also called hydro-jetting) uses a powerful jet of water — typically at 1,500–4,000 psi — to blast away grease, silt, roots, and scale from inside the drain. Unlike rods, which push the blockage, jetting also cleans the pipe walls, leaving less residue for future blockages to attach to. It is suitable for most drain sizes from 50 mm kitchen wastes up to 300 mm main sewers.

A standard sink or toilet unblock takes 30–60 minutes. External drain or main sewer clearance usually takes 1–2 hours. If we find root intrusion or a structural collapse during a CCTV survey, the repair timeline depends on the scale of the work — we will give you a written quote before starting.

We use dust sheets, protective equipment, and bring our own water supply for jetting. Once the drain is cleared we flush through thoroughly with clean water, clean up the work area, and dispose of any waste. You should be left with no trace we were there except a free-flowing drain.

Yes — roots are one of the most common causes of recurring external blockages. Roots are attracted to the moisture and nutrients inside a drain and can enter through even a hairline crack or a poorly jointed clay pipe. Once inside they grow rapidly, trapping debris and eventually causing a complete blockage or structural collapse. We remove roots by jetting and, if necessary, cutting, and can advise on pipe lining if the host pipe is damaged.

Recurring blockages usually indicate a root problem, a collapsed or misaligned pipe section, or a build-up issue caused by a partial sag (belly) in the pipe that traps water and solids. A CCTV survey will pinpoint the cause. Structural defects can often be repaired with no-dig pipe lining rather than excavation.

Yes. Sewer smells inside a property are often caused by a dried-out or broken trap, a cracked pipe, or a partial blockage that is producing gases. We will trace the source, clear any obstruction, and replace faulty traps or fittings as required.

Drain relining (CIPP — cured-in-place pipe) is a no-dig repair method where a resin-impregnated liner is inserted into the damaged pipe and inflated to bond with the host pipe. It is ideal for cracked, root-damaged, or corroded pipes where excavation would be disruptive or expensive. We assess whether lining is suitable and quote accordingly; not every pipe is a candidate.

No call-out fee for drain unblocking work. You pay for the clearance service, not just for us to attend. We provide a fixed price or clear estimate before starting work, and our price includes cleaning up afterwards.

Yes — we unblock drains, gullies, and grease traps for commercial kitchens, offices, retail premises, and landlord-managed properties across Hertfordshire. For commercial clients with multiple sites we offer scheduled maintenance jetting contracts to prevent costly emergency callouts.
