Heat pump installations are technically and financially complex in a way that most heating upgrades are not. Getting the system sizing wrong costs you money every year in wasted electricity. Using a non-MCS certified installer means you lose the £7,500 grant entirely. Getting the radiator sizing wrong means the house stays cold. We get this right because we survey every property properly before committing to a specification.

As MCS certified installers, we submit the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application to Ofgem on your behalf. You don't need to do anything — the grant is deducted directly from your invoice so you pay the net amount from day one. No claiming back, no waiting for a rebate.

Hertfordshire's housing stock is well-suited to heat pumps. Most semi-detached and detached properties built in the last 20–30 years have adequate insulation and radiator sizing. We'll tell you clearly at survey stage if any upgrades are needed — and what they cost.

We install Vaillant aroTHERM plus, Mitsubishi Ecodan, Daikin Altherma, and Samsung EHS — all proven, A++-rated systems with strong manufacturer support. Our recommendation is always based on what suits your property and budget, not brand partnerships.

Is Your Home Suitable for a Heat Pump?

Heat pumps work well in well-insulated homes with correctly sized radiators. Here's what we assess during the free survey.

Loft insulation

What works well

100mm+ recommended, 270mm ideal

Watch for

Uninsulated loft will require insulation before installation

Wall insulation

What works well

Cavity wall insulation preferred

Watch for

Solid wall properties may need higher-output radiators to compensate

Windows

What works well

Double or triple glazing throughout

Watch for

Single glazing significantly increases heat loss — may affect viability

Radiator sizing

What works well

Oversized radiators perform better at low flow temps

Watch for

Undersized radiators may need upgrading — we calculate this at survey

Outdoor space

What works well

Clear wall or ground space for outdoor unit

Watch for

Front-wall facing a highway may need permitted development check

EPC rating

What works well

C or above strongly preferred

Watch for

EPC must have no outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations to qualify for BUS grant

We Will Tell You Honestly

Not every Hertfordshire home is ready for a heat pump without preparatory work — and we would rather tell you that upfront than sell you a system that underperforms. The free survey includes a full written assessment of suitability, any required pre-works, and a net cost after the BUS grant.

Heat Pump Installation Costs

All prices are guide ranges. Your fixed written quote — including the £7,500 BUS grant deducted — is confirmed after the free home survey. All prices exclude VAT.

Heat Pump Brands We Install

We install the leading A++-rated brands with proven performance in UK conditions. Our recommendation is based on what suits your home — not margin.

Vaillant aroTHERM plus

MCS approved, A++ rated

Quiet, efficient, and proven in UK winters. Up to 7-year manufacturer guarantee when installed by certified engineers. Excellent cold-weather performance down to -20°C.

Mitsubishi Ecodan

Market-leading efficiency

Japan's most trusted heat pump brand. Consistent SCOP ratings of 3.8+ in UK conditions. One of the most popular choices among MCS installers nationally.

Daikin Altherma

Best-in-class cold weather

Exceptional performance at low outdoor temperatures — maintains high efficiency even when ambient temperature drops below zero. Smart controls standard.

Samsung EHS

Compact monobloc design

All-in-one monobloc design simplifies installation and reduces refrigerant pipework. Good choice for smaller properties or tighter outdoor spaces.

The Process

From Survey to Switch-On

01

Free home survey

We visit your property to assess insulation, radiator sizing, hot water demand and outdoor space. We calculate the right system specification and confirm BUS grant eligibility.

02

Fixed quote and grant confirmed

You receive a fully itemised fixed price with the £7,500 grant already deducted. No vague estimates — price locked before we start.

03

Grant application submitted

We submit the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application to Ofgem on your behalf. Most applications are processed quickly and the grant is approved before installation.

04

Installation — 2 to 3 days

Our MCS certified engineers remove the old boiler, install the heat pump outdoor unit, hot water cylinder, pipework and controls. We project-manage everything.

05

Commissioning and testing

We commission the system, test output at multiple settings, verify hot water temperature and optimise the controls for your home and schedule.

06

MCS certificate and handover

We issue your MCS Microgeneration Certificate (which triggers the grant payment), walk you through the controls, and cover all labour with a 2-year workmanship guarantee.

Heat Pumps in Hertfordshire — What to Know

Hertfordshire's housing mix ranges from Victorian terraces in St Albans to 1980s detached houses in Welwyn Garden City and modern new-builds around Watford and Hemel Hempstead. The newer stock — anything built post-1990 and particularly post-2000 — is generally well-suited to heat pump installation with little or no preparatory work.

The county's hard water (300–400ppm) is worth considering for the hot water cylinder and pipework: we use copper cylinders with adequate insulation and can discuss scale protection as part of the installation.

Heat Pump FAQs

You don't — but your installer does. Only MCS certified engineers can install heat pumps that qualify for the £7,500 BUS grant. C A Waters is MCS certified, so our customers automatically qualify.

Most Hertfordshire homes built or refurbished after 2000 are suitable. Key factors are insulation levels, radiator sizing, and available outdoor space. We assess all of this at the free survey and will tell you honestly if a heat pump isn't right for your property.

Before the £7,500 BUS grant, installed costs range from £10,000 to £18,000. After the grant, the net cost is typically £2,500–£10,500 depending on property size and whether any radiator upgrades are needed.

Often yes. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures (45–55°C vs 70–80°C for gas boilers), so radiators need to be large enough to emit the same heat at that lower temperature. We calculate this at the survey — and if radiators need upsizing, we factor the cost into the quote.

Most installations take 2–3 days. This includes removing the old boiler, installing the outdoor unit, hot water cylinder, controls and pipework, then commissioning and testing.

Modern units run at 45–50dB at 1 metre — similar to a quiet conversation or a running fridge. Significantly quieter than units from 5–10 years ago. We site the outdoor unit carefully to minimise any impact on neighbours.

In most cases, no. Air source heat pumps fall under Permitted Development rights. Exceptions include listed buildings, some conservation areas, and front-wall installations facing a highway. We advise at survey stage.

For a full system replacement, we decommission, disconnect and remove your gas boiler. Gas supply is capped in coordination with your gas supplier. Some customers retain the boiler as a backup — we advise on this at survey.

Yes — and it works very well. Heat pumps run on electricity, so generating your own solar electricity reduces running costs significantly. We can advise on compatibility and introduce you to trusted solar installers.

SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) is the average efficiency of the heat pump over a full heating season. An SCOP of 3.5 means 3.5 units of heat produced per unit of electricity consumed. Modern units achieve SCOP 3.5–4.5 in UK conditions — higher SCOP means lower running costs.

Yes. Air source heat pumps provide both central heating and domestic hot water via a dedicated cylinder, storing water at 55–60°C. This fully replaces your gas boiler.

Annual servicing is recommended (typically £120–£180) covering filter cleaning, refrigerant level check, electrical inspection and performance test. No annual gas safety certificate is required. Maintenance costs are lower than a gas boiler.
