A boiler breakdown is always inconvenient — in winter, it can be an emergency. We offer same-day call-outs across all of Hertfordshire and carry a comprehensive range of spare parts to maximise the chance of completing your repair on the first visit. We service and repair all major boiler brands: Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal, Glow-worm, Viessmann, Potterton, Ferroli and more.

Every repair visit starts with a full diagnostic check. We read error codes, inspect the combustion system, check water pressure and circulation, and test all safety devices before providing a written cost for any required parts and labour. You approve the repair cost before we proceed — no nasty surprises on the invoice.

Annual servicing keeps your boiler safe, efficient and within manufacturer warranty terms. Most extended warranties require documented annual servicing by a Gas Safe engineer. We issue a full service report after every visit, providing proof if you ever need to make a warranty claim.

In Hertfordshire particularly, hard water (300–400ppm) is a leading cause of premature boiler failure. Scale builds up inside heat exchangers, restricts flow and causes the boiler to overheat and lock out. If your boiler keeps cutting out without an obvious reason, or if your radiators have persistent cold patches, sludge is often to blame. We diagnose the root cause rather than just clearing the fault code.

Common Boiler Fault Codes Explained

Your boiler's display shows a fault code when it detects a problem. Here are the 15 most common codes across major brands — and what they usually mean.

BrandCodeMeaning
Worcester BoschEA 227Ignition failure — boiler tried to light but failed
Worcester BoschE9Safety temperature exceeded — overheat lockout
Worcester BoschF7Flame detected when it should not be present
Worcester BoschA28Ignition unsuccessful after repeated attempts
Worcester BoschH07Boiler flow temperature too high
VaillantF75No pressure increase detected when pump runs
VaillantF28Ignition failure — no flame detected
VaillantF29Flame loss during operation
VaillantF61Gas valve fault detected
VaillantF22Dry-fire protection — low water pressure
BaxiE168Gas valve error
BaxiE110Boiler in high limit thermostat lockout
BaxiE119Low water pressure in system
IdealF1No ignition — failed to light
All MakesLow PressureSystem pressure below minimum (usually below 0.5 bar)

Not all fault codes are listed. If your code is not shown here, call us on 0208 092 1359 — we will diagnose it over the phone if possible, or arrange a same-day visit.

Signs Your Boiler Needs Urgent Attention

Error code showing on display

Most faults lock the boiler out and display a code. Do not repeatedly reset — investigate the cause.

No heating or hot water

Complete loss of heat or hot water is always worth investigating promptly, especially before winter.

Boiler cutting out repeatedly

If it keeps shutting off, there's an underlying fault — low pressure, overheating, scale, or a faulty component.

Strange noises (banging, kettling, gurgling)

Banging usually indicates scale. Gurgling suggests air or sludge. Whistling (kettling) means scale on the heat exchanger — common in Hertfordshire.

Yellow or orange flame (should be blue)

Call immediately and do not use the boiler. A yellow/orange flame may indicate incomplete combustion or a carbon monoxide risk.

Boiler leaking water

Leaks from the boiler body indicate a failing internal component — pressure relief valve, pump seal, or heat exchanger. Do not ignore it.

Carbon monoxide alarm activating

Leave the property immediately, leave the door open, do not use electrical switches, call 0800 111 999 (National Gas Emergency), then call us.

Repair or Replace? An Honest Guide

We always give you an honest assessment. If replacement is the better long-term value, we will tell you — even if it means less revenue from the repair.

Boiler under 8 years old, first fault

Repair — almost always worth it at this age

Boiler 8–12 years old, first or second fault

Repair if cost is below 40% of a new boiler

Boiler 12–15 years old, any fault

Get a replacement quote alongside the repair quote

Boiler over 15 years, repeated faults

Replace — parts availability declining, efficiency low

G-rated boiler (pre-2000)

Replace — potential 30% bill saving plus reliability

Third repair in 24 months

Replace — pattern suggests system-wide deterioration

Repair cost over 50% of new boiler

Replace — not economical to repair

Not sure? Call us first.

Describe the fault over the phone — we can often give you a strong indication of whether repair or replacement is the better route before spending anything on a call-out.

Annual Boiler Servicing

An annual boiler service is not just a legal nicety — it is essential for safety, efficiency and warranty compliance. Most boiler manufacturers require a Gas Safe engineer to service their boiler every 12 months to maintain the extended warranty terms.

The best time to book a service is before the heating season — September or October — so any issues are resolved before cold weather arrives. We offer flexible appointment slots including evenings and Saturdays across Hertfordshire.

Our standard annual service covers every safety and performance check required under Gas Safe regulations. After every service, we issue a full written service report documenting all checks, readings and any advisories — the documentation you need if you ever make a warranty claim.

What We Check During an Annual Service

Boiler casing removed — internal visual inspection
Heat exchanger cleaned of debris and soot
Burner and ignition system inspected and cleaned
Flue flow tested and flue terminal inspected
Combustion analysis with calibrated flue gas analyser
Gas inlet pressure and burner pressure checked and set
All safety devices tested (high limit thermostat, pressure relief valve)
Condensate trap cleared and pipe checked
Expansion vessel pressure checked
Controls and programmer tested
System water pressure checked
Full service report issued with Gas Safe notification

Hertfordshire Hard Water & Boiler Faults

Hertfordshire's water hardness of 300–400ppm (parts per million) is one of the highest in England. At this level, limescale builds up inside your boiler's heat exchanger within 2–3 years of an unprotected installation. Signs include kettling noises, reduced efficiency, and repeated lockouts without a clear cause. In severe cases, scale can block the heat exchanger completely.

If your boiler keeps cutting out and loses pressure repeatedly, there may also be iron oxide sludge (magnetite) circulating in the system — particularly in older systems without a magnetic filter. A power flush, combined with fitting a magnetic filter, removes this sludge and prevents re-accumulation.

Boiler Repair FAQs

Our standard call-out is £95 + VAT, covering travel, full fault diagnosis, and the first 30 minutes on site — which resolves many common faults outright. Additional labour is £50 + VAT per half hour. We always confirm the total cost before proceeding.

Repeated pressure loss almost always indicates a leak somewhere in the heating system — even a very slow weep from a radiator valve, TRV body or pipe joint. Less commonly, the pressure relief valve is opening and venting water. We diagnose the source of the pressure loss and repair it properly.

EA 227 is an ignition failure code — the boiler tried to light but no flame was detected. Causes include a faulty ignition electrode, blocked burner, failed spark generator, or a gas supply issue. A Gas Safe engineer is required to investigate and repair.

F75 indicates the pump circuit is not generating the expected pressure increase. Most commonly a failed pump, blocked pump impeller, or a faulty pressure sensor. Our engineers carry Vaillant pump components and can usually resolve this on the first visit.

Simple faults are often resolved within the 30-minute call-out. Part replacements (pumps, PCBs, valves) take 1–3 hours. If a less common part needs ordering, we return next day once it arrives.

Often yes, but parts availability diminishes for very old models. We will give you an honest assessment — if the repair cost approaches the value of a new boiler, we will say so rather than chase the repair revenue.

If your pilot light goes out repeatedly, do not keep re-lighting it more than once. A thermocouple or gas supply issue is the most common cause. If you smell gas at any point, leave the property immediately and call the National Gas Emergency line: 0800 111 999.

Once per year, ideally September or October before the heating season. Annual servicing is required by most manufacturers to maintain extended warranty periods.

Yes — most extended manufacturer warranties require documented annual servicing by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We issue a full written service report after every visit as your warranty evidence.

Our service covers: internal inspection, heat exchanger and burner clean, ignition system check, flue gas combustion analysis, gas pressure check and adjustment, safety device testing, condensate trap clearance, expansion vessel pressure check, controls test, and a full written service report.

Cold patches at the bottom of radiators are almost always caused by iron oxide sludge (magnetite) settling there. This is particularly common in Hertfordshire due to the hard water and older unprotected systems. A power flush clears the sludge; fitting a magnetic filter prevents it from returning.

At 10 years, if it is the first fault and the repair cost is less than a third of a replacement, repair is usually correct. At 13–15+ years, we recommend getting a replacement quote alongside the repair to make a fully informed decision.

Yes — our vans carry common parts for Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi and Ideal: pumps, diverter valves, PCBs, thermistors, gas valves, pressure vessels and more. Less common parts are sourced next-day.

Travel to your property, full fault diagnosis, and the first 30 minutes of hands-on work — often enough to resolve straightforward faults. We explain what is wrong and agree the total cost before any further work proceeds.
